I've often heard children say, "There's nothing to do today". I beg to differ. I'd like to inspire you to do something. Anything. Read. Bake. Hike. Fish. Plant. Sail. Climb. Play. Reach. Move. Laugh. Dream; and take time to sit with me on The Old Granite Step.

A view of the Quabbin Resevoir

Several weeks ago, before the snow started to fly, we took a short hike through the Federation of Womens Clubs State Forest so that we could enjoy the view of the Quabbin Resevoir.  From this vantage point, the view is absolutely stunning.

The flora and fauna that we saw along the way is tell-tale of what lies on the forest floor in New England.

This tree is a piece of natural art.

The sunshine beckons "this way".

The bees were busy on one of the last days before the frost.

Young white pines symbolize new growth.

The forest is very visitor friendly.

Trails are well marked and maps are provided for assistance.

Princess pine is one of many different ground covers we found.

There are many different types of moss and lichen covering the ground, rocks and fallen trees.

There are several different "scenic view" locations around the reservoir, but this is a favorite.

It's hard to believe that homes, businesses and even graves were moved to create this body of water.

The towns of Enfield, Prescott, Dana and Greenwich no longer exist.

Our trip back reveals more surprises on the forest floor.

Many trees fell in the heavy, wet Thanksgiving snow.  Always take care when hiking in the woods.
